En lille by på grænsen til Mexico styres af den forbryderiske landejer Nathan Burdette. Da Nathans bror Joe begår et mord, bures han inde af sheriffen Chance, indtil en politichef udefra kan se på sagen. Chance forventer, at Nathan og hans slæng vil forsøge at befri Joe. Til at hjælpe sig har han den unge mesterskytte Colorado, den tørlagte alkoholiker og vicesherif Dude og den halte og tandløse Stumpy.
